NHL free agent market: Giroux in Ottawa, 68 million for Goodreau in Columbus

On July 13, the NHL free agent market opened. The biggest player on the market could have been Evgeni Malkin, but the forward negotiated a new 4-year contract with Pittsburgh at the last minute.

Among the big trades, we note the move of forward Claude Giroux to Ottawa. Are the Senators preparing to return to the playoffs?

Already at the end of Day 1, Columbus has acquired a major asset in the current market. Forward Johnny Goodreau was given a seven-year contract. The Calgary player scored 115 points last season, but the Lights were unable to retain the top hockey player. That said, Columbus is a pretty surprising choice, but the contract is also really huge. Goodreau signed a $68.2 million deal.

Washington strengthened its goaltending line with Darcy Kemper. The keeper, who helped Colorado win the Stanley Cup, got a 5-year contract from the Capitals on the free agent market.

The New York Rangers were able to pick up forward Vincent Trocheck, who scored 21 pucks and 51 points last season. The contract is for seven years.

Tampa Bay, which has reached the Stanley Cup Finals three straight times (and won two trophies) is doing everything it can to keep the current core of the team. The Lightning announced that defensemen Mikhail Sergachev and Eric Chernak and forward Anthony Cirelli have been given maximum 8-year contracts.

John Klingberg, Nazem Kadri and Nino Niederreiter remain free agents for now.
